godzilla has ALWAYS been about the human story - monster added on later
it started as a way to express the horrors of the atom bomb and how it affected japanese society. G-1.0 is about as "godzilla" as any of them, really hitting the roots of the franchise after all the shitty action flick garbage the series has seen in the last few years. the human story is the core of the story, and G-1.0 isn't even as outrageously human-centric as other entries have been.

I'll admit I didn't hate it. I enjoy Roland Emmerich's movies, but I hate Matthew Broderick. He's not an actor, he's just Matthew Broderick in every role, all I see is a neurotic stereotypical whiny jew manchild who hasn't grown as an actor since Ferris Bueller. But the storyline & special effects were kino. I look forward to AI becoming advanced enough so I can easily edit out Broderick and replace him with, oh I don't know, maybe Patrick Swayze or Mel Gibson in his prime.
